The Gamma Tau Chapter of Sigma Chi
Established on April 28th, 1934, the Gamma Tau chapter of Sigma Chi at North Dakota State University is committed to fostering and preserving high academic standards, training undergraduates in leadership responsibilities, and instilling the ideals of good citizenship. The chapter actively encourages participation in college programs, promotes close cooperation between members and college officials, faculty, and other student organizations, and provides an environment of brotherhood that supports purposeful living on campus.
Early Beginnings
The journey of the Gamma Tau Chapter began in 1922 when a group of students at North Dakota Agricultural College (now North Dakota State University) formed a local fraternity known as the Delta Kappa Sigmas. These students were driven by a desire to create a brotherhood that emphasized academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement.
Petitioning for a Charter
For nine years, the Delta Kappa Sigmas worked diligently to align themselves with the values and principles of Sigma Chi, one of the most prestigious fraternities in the United States. Their efforts included building a strong presence on campus, engaging in philanthropic activities, and fostering a sense of brotherhood among their members.
Charter Approval and Installation
After years of dedication and perseverance, the Delta Kappa Sigmas' petition for a Sigma Chi charter was finally approved. On April 28th, 1934, the Gamma Tau Chapter of Sigma Chi was officially installed. The founding class consisted of 37 members from the Delta Kappa Sigmas, who became the first brothers of the Gamma Tau Chapter.
Growth and Development
Since its founding, the Gamma Tau Chapter has initiated nearly 2,000 brothers over the past 90 years. The chapter has consistently upheld the values of Sigma Chi, focusing on personal development, high ambition, and academic excellence. The brotherhood has built strong connections with college officials, faculty, and other student organizations, contributing to a vibrant campus community.
Legacy and Alumni Involvement
The strength of the Gamma Tau Chapter lies in its close-knit brotherhood and high standards. Many alumni remain actively involved in the chapter, providing mentorship and support to current members. The chapter takes immense pride in its accomplishments and history, continually striving to maintain the high standards set by its founders.

The Peterson Significant Chapter Award, sponsored annually by the Sigma Chi Foundation, is the highest honor that the Fraternity bestows upon an undergraduate chapter. Named for 38th Grand Consul J. Dwight Peterson, INDIANA 1919. The award recognizes excellent, but not impossible, performance by chapters in all major areas of operation and programming. For many years, the Peterson plaque has been a symbol of dedication, idealism, and achievement.
There is no minimum or maximum number of chapters that may win the award in any given year. Award criteria is assigned on an objective scale and encompasses the entire gamut of chapter activities; from financial stability and recruitment, chapter and member reputation, to ritual and initiation performance. Because chapter operations vary among campuses and chapters, members of each chapter measure themselves against these absolute Sigma Chi standards, rather than against other chapters.
This year NDSU's Gamma Tau chapter earned the J. Dwight Peterson Significant Chapter Blue Award. The Blue award is presented to chapters that scored between 90-96.99 percent on their annual reports.
We would like to thank our active brothers and past executive team for striving to, once again, earn the Peterson Significant Chapter Award for the Gamma Tau chapter.
